De eerste week in Nieuw-Zeeland heeft me een paar lesjes geleerd: minstens de helft van alle toeristen is Brits (ze ontvluchten kennelijk de sneeuw), niet de kiwi maar de kalkoen zou het nationale symbool moeten zijn (ze lopen overal rond), je moet links rijden (gelukkig wist ik dat al), lange mouwen betekent zongebruinde handen maar witte armen, mijn conditie is nog niet op peil maar de soms steile heuvels zijn goed te doen en het landschap is geweldig, zeker met zonneschijn, hoewel het dan wel weer heet is. Ik ben zelfs fietsers tegengekomen, waaronder twee Kiwi's die me konden vertellen over het gebied waar ik naar op weg ben. Nog een paar dagen rij ik langs stranden en baaien en dan buig ik af naar het midden van het Noordereiland. Daar bevinden zich volkanische meren en bergen. Nog een ding: de foto's laten niet zien hoe mooi de Coromandel Peninsula nou echt is.

There's a few things I've noticed in my first week in New Zealand: at least half of the tourists are British (fleeing from the snow I guess), not the kiwi but the turkey should be the country's national symbol (they're gobbling virtually everywhere), driving is on the left side of the road (luckily I knew that beforehand!), long sleeves tan my hands while my arms remain white, I'm not exactly in shape but the - at times steep - hills aren't too much of a problem and the scenery is just wonderful, especially with sunshine, which is inevitably pared with heat. I've even met a few cyclists, amongst them two Kiwis who gave me tips about the area I'm about to head into. Just a few more days of beach watching and then I'm off to the center of North Island, which has volcanic lakes and mountains. One more thing: the pictures don't justify the beauty that is the Coromandel Peninsula.
